About Battle

Battle, a pretty market town not far from Hastings and named after a very famous battle in 1066 involving a King named Harold, you may have heard of it?

The town today is a vibrant mix of coffee shops, tea rooms, independent boutiques, restaurants and the usual high street stores, with a good mix of history and pretty buildings thrown in for good measure. You can visit the famous 11th century abbey that was built by William the Conqueror and explore the ruins and grounds and enjoy the interactive displays and information at the visitors centre. In the Autumn months you can watch the re-enactment of the Battle of Hastings and this draws performers from all over Europe. If you are lucky enough to visit during Bonfire season then you must catch the torch lit procession that marches through the town and finishes with a huge bonfire and fantastic firework display. Along with these events the town has a busy social calendar throughout the year, with music, arts and even a scarecrow festival, so something for all the family.

If you like your walking then there are many footpaths that can be picked up from the town leading you out into the surrounding countryside and ancient woodlands that have hardly changed since the days of the battle and they are marked ‘1066 Trail’ so very easy to pick up.

The beauty about the towns in 1066 country is that there is always a garden, castle or stately home close by for you to visit if staying in one of our holiday cottages.
